At Risk by Alice Hoffman
Book Number:RC 26998
219 pages on 5 sides
read by Jill ferris
When eleven-year-old Amanda suffers from a virulent summer cold, the family doctor is summoned. The talented sixth-grade gymnast, who dreams of the Olympics, is diagnosed as having AIDS, contracted through a blood transfusion five years earlier. A dramatic portrayal of the complex reactions of Amanda’s mother, brother, and grandparents, as well as those of the New England community in which they live. Some strong language. I was hesitant about this book, but I'm glad I read it. It made me stop and think about how as a Mother I would react. I asked my husband, who is a middle school teacher about how our school system would react to a situation like this one. A very different book from Hoffman, I liked it even though the subject was a tough one. I give it a 4 out of 5. I would even recommend it to some middle or high school readers.
Happy reading, Carla/TexasRed
